The relative of the petunia, the painted tongue (Salpiglossis sinuata), catches the eye with its spectacular trumpet-shaped blooms in shades of deep violet, gold, and magenta.
This easy-to-grow annual plant adds color to gardens and potted plants. The Painted Tongue thrives in moderate temperatures, unfurls its blossoms in fall and spring, and stops blooming in the summer heat.
Salpiglossis is a genus of approximately 3 species[1] of short-lived perennial or annual plants that are native to Chile, Argentina, and Mexico. Painted tongue plants can reach 0.6 to 0.9 m (2 to 3 feet) and span approximately 30 cm (1 foot).
This plant often produces a late splash of color when temperatures drop in autumn.
