Spix’s White-fronted Capuchin Characteristics

The Spix’s white-fronted capuchin[1] (Cebus unicolor) is a species of gracile capuchin monkey.

  • The species is widespread in the upper Amazon basin in Peru and Brazil. It is also present in northern Bolivia.
  • This South American primate has a head and body length between 36.5 and 37.5 cm (14.4 and 14.8 in) and a tail length between 42 and 46 cm (17 and 18 in).
  • They have greyish-brown fur on their backs with darker limbs and yellowish-brown hands and feet. The front is cream.
  • Their face is pink, and they have a dark brown, wedge-shaped cap that is distinctly separated from the lighter forehead.

Spix’s White-fronted Capuchin Facts

  • It was previously classified as a subspecies of Humboldt’s white-fronted capuchin (Cebus albifrons).
  • However, according to the genetic studies by Boubli et al., Ryland and Mittermeier elevated it to the status of a distinct species.
  • The diet is diverse and includes fruits, insects, insect larvae, and other invertebrates, reptiles such as birds, lizards, bird eggs, small mammals, flowers, honey, nectar, leaves, nuts, palm trees, stems, seeds, and tree frogs.
  • They are preyed upon primarily by birds of prey and probably small cats, particularly the margay. However, snakes have been known to attack them.
  • Spix’s white-fronted capuchins are polygamous primates and live in large groups of 15 to 35 individuals.
  • They are among the few primates observed making and using tools in the wild.
