Spix’s Night Monkey Characteristics
The Spix’s night monkey[1] (Aotus vociferans), also called the Spix’s owl monkey, Colombian gray nocturnal monkey, and noisy night monkey is a species of night monkey native to South America.
- The Spix’s night monkeys have gray fur almost all over their bodies, fading to lightly brown on their bellies and dark gray on their hands and tails.
- Their faces are white and framed by three vertical black stripes that extend to the top of their heads.
- Like many nocturnal animals, their eyes are relatively large, and their fingers very long.
- Male and female species are not sexually dimorphic.
Spix’s Night Monkey Facts
- Spix’s night monkeys are among the most complete quadrupedal monkeys: even when at rest, they almost always carry some of their weight with one or both hands.
- These South American primates are skilled jumpers, capable of crossing 4 m (13 ft) in one leap.
- As the name suggests, Spix’s night monkeys are nocturnal.
- These monkeys typically wake up about 15 minutes after sunset and return to their roost before sunrise.
- Spix’s night monkeys are among the most aggressive New World primates. Adults of the same sex can fight ferociously, and adults of the opposite sex, while rarely openly fighting, sometimes exhibit hostile body language and vocalizations even if they are a mated pair.
