Shortridge’s Langur Distribution
Shortridge’s Capped Langur Characteristics
The Shortridge’s Capped langur[1] (Trachypithecus shortridgei) is a colobine primate inhabiting low to medium evergreen and semi-evergreen forests east of the Chindwin River in northeastern Myanmar and southwestern Myanmar, China, in the Nu and Dulong valleys.
- The species gets its name from the thick hairs on the skull, usually gray or black.
- Its back surface is usually covered with black, brown, or gray hair. Its belly can vary from bright orange to pale yellow.
- As with most langurs, babies vary significantly in coloration from adults, although the differences between capped langurs are less dramatic than most of their relatives.
- Adult langurs have black skin, while babies have pink skin.
- The baby’s hair is usually light orange, similar to an adult’s breast color.
Shortridge’s Capped Langur Facts
- Activity budgets show that these langurs spend half the day feeding and moving between feeding sites.
- The average group of Shortridge’s capped langurs consists of about 9 individuals: a single dominant male, a few adult females, and their young.
- Although these langurs are very social and talkative animals, they are generally quiet when feeding.
- Although generally silent while feeding, individuals occasionally make a “nouk” sound when someone loses contact with the main group.
- Dominant male species are much more protective of their mating partners and their young than their food sources.
