Collared Titi Distribution
Collared Titi Characteristics
The collared titi[1], also called the widow monkey, or yellow-handed monkey inhabits the lush rainforests of the Amazon and is typically found south of Río Negro and north of Río Solimões.
- Collared titis are small monkeys with long, glossy black fur on the underside and fading to rusty brown on the back.
- Their hands are light beige or yellow. Their faces are gray, and, in keeping with their name, they have a distinctive white ruff of fur on their necks.
- Their alternate common name, “Widow Monkey” is derived from their pale face, white neck, and “gloved” hands that contrast with their dark body, giving them the appearance of a grieving widow.
- Their tails are long, hairy, and non-prehensile.
Collared Titi Facts
- Collared titis live in small, territorial groups consisting of a bonded pair and their young.
- Usually, they rest on narrow horizontal branches, and their roosting places are tangles of vines on small branches at least 15 m (49 ft) above the ground.
- Titi monkeys are often known to “duet” with each other, either between an adult female and an adult male, an adult female and her son, or an adult male and his daughter.
- Titis of the genus Cheracebus have been observed to be outcompeted by other titi species with which they share their habitat and are forced to live in areas with poorer vegetation.
- Collared titi monkeys most likely contribute to seed dispersal due to their fruit consumption.
