Miss Waldron’s Red Colobus Characteristics
Miss Waldron’s red colobus[1] (Piliocolobus waldronae) is endemic to West Africa.
- Black fur drapes most of Miss Waldron’s red colobus, but a distinctive pattern of bright red fur can be found on its thighs and forehead, setting it apart from conspecifics.
- It is an Old World monkey and stands around 1m (3 feet) tall with a small head for its build.

- Miss Waldron’s red colobus was discovered in December 1933 by Willoughby P. Lowe, a collector at the British Museum (Natural History).
- Lowe named it after another museum employee, Miss Fanny Waldron, a colleague on the expedition.
- High-canopy rainforests in Ghana and Ivory Coast serve as the exclusive habitat of Miss Waldron’s red colobus.
- The monkey generally forms large family groups of 20 or more individuals.
- It is a very vocal and social animal, often communicating with others with loud calls, screeches, and chattering.
- Their safety strategy depends on the use of the many eyes and ears of the group.
