Lesson’s Saddle-Back Tamarin Characteristics

Lesson’s saddle-back tamarin[1] (Leontocebus fuscus) is a small New-world monkey endemic to South America.

  • Lesson’s saddle-back tamarin was once considered a subspecies of the brown-mantled tamarin, Leontocebus fuscicollis.
  • Lesson’s saddle-back tamarins have black fur that extends from their heads to the middle of their backs, where it fades to a reddish hue.
  • The hands, feet, and tail are black. They have hairless ears and whitish fur around the snout.
  • Lesson’s saddleback tamarin has a head and body length of between 212 millimeters (8.3 in) and 234 millimeters (9.2 in). It weighs between 350 g (12 oz) and 400 g (14 oz).

Lesson’s Saddle-Back Tamarin Facts

  • Its type locality is in Colombia, on the plains of Mocoa, Putumayo, between the Caquetá River and the Putumayo River.
  • Lesson’s saddle-back tamarins live in small social groups with multiple males and females of 4 to 12 members and occupy an area of ​​30 to 50 hectares.
  • Group members usually sleep together in a group. Vine tendrils are typical resting places for these species.
  • Compared to other primates, tamarins begin their daily activities late in the morning, a few minutes to an hour after sunrise.
  • Humans are responsible for the decline in the number of surviving lesson’s saddle-back tamarins due to the clearing of their forest habitat.
