Black Titi Characteristics
The Black Titi[1] (Cheracebus lugens) is a species of Titi, a New World Monkey endemic to South America. It is found in Venezuela, Colombia, and Brazil. It is also known as White-chested Titi.
- It was described in 1811 under the name Calicebus lugens. The coat is usually blackish mixed with dark brown hairs and some auburn hairs on the back and sides.
- The hands are white or yellowish. The body weight ranges from 1 to 2 kilograms, and the head-body length is about 290 to 450 millimeters.
- This species shows no sexual dimorphism. Members of this species can live up to 12 years in captivity.
Black Titi Facts
- Social groups consist of a monogamous pair and one or two of their young. Groups of 5 are sometimes seen, and single individuals (“floaters“) may also be sighted occasionally.
- The white-chested titi is a generalized quadrupedal, using four-legged walking and running about 66.8 percent of the time. This species also practices active jumping and climbing.
- Groups of black titis perch on large branches, often just above the prominent canopy.
- Although fruits make up most of this primate’s diet, invertebrates and leaves are also eaten to a lesser extent.
- The Black Titi is very affectionate within the family unit, but the adult pair is aggressive towards neighboring pairs.
